The project focuses on the area of the Lower Bojana Basin and Ulcinj Ecosystem Complex (LBBUEC),
that encompass Key Biodiversity Area (KBA) and Catchment Management Zone (CMZ) of the river
Bojana, its delta, tributes, Ulcinj Salina, Lake Šas, Ada Bojana Island, Long beach and marine area.
Being hydrologically dynamic system of springs and canyon area, Mediterranean karst, wetlands
around rivers and lakes, and sandy coastal zone, this biodiversity hotspot is under numerous threats
showing disturbing evidence of flooding, surface run-off, soil and beach erosion, long-term loss of
vegetation cover, habitat fragmentation, change in plant community composition, population and
species isolation, dieback of trees, eutrophication and spread of invasive species.
The main objectives of the project, being a continuous effort for sustainable development are:
- Protection and revitalisation of the biodiversity objects and ecosystems
Conservation of existing, functional ecological structures and increasing (self-) regulating capacity of
forest, wetland and grassland areas enabled by mapping, protecting and monitoring of ecosystems
and their functionality.
- Raised visibility, number and diversity of nature protection supporters
Targeted planning and restoration of ecological network’s integrity and ecologically significant sites
through local interventions, promoting wider actors’ participation, inspiration, positive attitude and
ownership of the process therefore ensuring a strong empowered front for resilience of nature and
people’s heritage.
The project is directly functioning in the array of: ecosystem-based approach, ecological
connectivity, climate change resilience, nature-based solutions, low regret tactic.
Action is lead by EnvPro in a diverse partnership with local NGOs MSJA and MogUL, local community
and tourism start-ups, supported by institutions, EPA, Forest Administration, Municipality Ulcinj.
Support is provided by EuroNatur through the BESTbelt project, funded by the European Union.
Project has started on the 1 st of November 2023 and will run for 24 months.
