In a remote part of the Rumija Mountain area in the southern-east part of Montenegro, in the Medjurec canyon, tributary to Bojana River Basin, patches of old growth beech forest have been found recently by EnvPro and its supporters, experts, guided by the local community.
Ecosystem based approach, and Climate Change integration as well as the process of collaborative protected area designation and management is envisaged to contribute to institutional and local actors in need of know how. The project proposes effective protection and collaborative management of the upstream Bojana River ecosystem. It plans to work on biodiversity mapping, collaborative conservation and management concept, capacity development and monitoring programmes to ultimately build initiative for formal protected area designation.
The process will bring together: experts from University Eberswalde and national, local and young researchers; institutions, ministry, EPA, municipality Ulcinj and Bar; local stakeholders, NGO Mogul, NGO Mt. club Rumija, local enthusiasts and land/forest owners, tourist entrepreneurs, hunting association. The project started in May 2024 and will last for half year.
The project is funded by ADA, Coordination Office for Technical Cooperation - Austrian Embassy in Tirana, and supported by the Ministry of tourism, ecology, spatial planning and northern region development, based on the MoU signed with EnvPro, trough GEF7 project. Phase II is also already planed by EnvPro and partners.
