EnvPro has launched the project “Guardians of Green: Protecting Petrolamium crnojevicii and Međureč Forests”, aimed at improving biodiversity protection and strengthening the role of civil society organizations in the implementation of the Green Agenda in the Western Balkans.
The project focuses on two biodiversity-significant areas in Montenegro: the habitats of the endemic plant species Petrolamium crnojevicii and the beech forests of the Međureč canyon, which contribute to biodiversity conservation, soil stability, and climate change adaptation. Despite their ecological importance, these areas are exposed to pressures related to habitat loss, wildfires, unplanned land use, and climate change impacts.
Within the project, two participatory action plans will be developed: one dedicated to the conservation of Petrolamium crnojevicii and the other to the restoration and conservation of the beech forests of the Međureč canyon. The plans will be based on contemporary nature conservation approaches, including micro-reserves, the application of Nature-based Solutions (NbS), and other effective area-based conservation measures (OECM), with the active involvement of local communities, experts, civil society organizations, and relevant institutions.
A particular focus will be placed on strengthening civil society capacities, encouraging citizen participation in biodiversity monitoring, and linking local initiatives with national nature conservation policies.
The project is implemented by EnvPro, in partnership with Parks Dinarides, with the support of the Belgrade Open School, within the Green Agenda Multiplier programme, funded by the European Union. The project started on 1 November 2025 and is implemented over a 12-month period.
