The Zeta River is internationally recognized for its high values of biodiversity. Monitoring the state of biodiversity conservation is one of the most important components of nature protection. The existence of a monitoring protocol is necessary for the quality implementation of bio-monitoring. Through the Balkan Water Project - Biomonitoring for the „Zeta River“ Nature Park, we have created a Protocol and a Field Guide for monitoring invertebrate indicator species of the „Zeta River“ Nature Park.
The monitoring protocol contains a description of selected sites and indicator species for biomonitoring, a description of procedures for monitoring and sampling of indicator species, keys for their identification and data collection forms, research results of zero status of indicator species at selected monitoring sites, recommendations for analysis of results and procedures in the event of a change in the state of ecosystems. The monitoring protocol is designed to be replicable, ie. that it can be used as a draft for the development of biomonitoring protocols for other rivers similar to the Zeta in Southeast Europe, which includes a list of indicator species that are widespread in this region. The Field Guide contains a description of the procedures for monitoring and sampling indicator species, keys for their identification and data collection forms. The Field Guide for monitoring is also designed to be replicable, ie. that it can be applied for biomonitoring other areas with similar characteristics. The document is adapted for use by local actors for fieldwork and data collection.
The project lasted one year and was implemented with the partner organization The Nature Conservancy (TNC), and with the support of the U.S. Forest Service (USFS).
