Conservation of endemic, rare and threatened plant species on Mt. Orjen and Conservation plan for *Iris orjenii*

study report

The unique nature of Orjen is given special value by numerous rare and endemic species of plants whose survival has been endangered by threats to the environment. On the other hand, insufficiently researched, but very important for the preservation of biodiversity of this area thez deserve special attention. In order to contribute to the protection of the natural wealth of this area, we started the implementation of the project Conservation of endemic, rare and threatened plant species on Mt. Orjen.

The study made within the project is the final product of work and findings conducted within a rapid assessment of the five rare and endemic plant species: Satureja horvatii Šilić Dianthus knappii (Pant.) Ascherson et Kanitz ek Borbas Edraianthus serpillifolius (Vis.) A. DC ., Salvia brachiodon Vandas Linum elegans Spruner ek Boissier and detailed assessment and protection activities for Iris orjenii Bräuchler & Cikovac.

A species conservation plan has also been developed for Iris orjenii. Several conservation activities were undertaken, the removal of vegetation at the Vučji zub site, where there is the largest population of the Orjen’s iris, the relocation of the mountain path that crossed it, the reintroduction of the iris at the Sedlo site in Montenegro, with high growth and flowering success.

The project lasted one year from February 2019 to May 2022 and was carried out with partner organizations: the University of Primorska, Kopar (Slovenia), the Natural History Museum Rijeka, Rijeka (Croatia), as well as the Agency for Development and Protection of Orjen, Herceg Novi, numerous young researchers and volunteers.

The project is supported by the Critical Ecosystems Partnership Fund.
